I grew up in Austria in the countryside. It was the 80s of the last century — a time before the Internet. Since I was a kid, I loved learning. I wanted to learn reading and writing before school started. My relatives said, enjoy your childhood. The real world will start the minute you enter school. It is early enough to learn skills like writing and reading in school. Well, not exactly the answer I wanted to hear.
Schools were the only place to learn skills in those days. Outside school, people were dealing with their daily lives — almost no possibility to access new know-how once a person graduated from school. The only way to obtain skills was by going to university and traveling and traveling to places where people lived that have acquired certain skills.
